Cairo – March 2025

Eng. Mohamed Mendi, a board member of the Chamber of Wood and Furniture Industry at the Federation of Egyptian Industries, affirmed that the Egyptian furniture sector has a significant opportunity to strengthen its position in various markets. This is supported by the rising prices of Turkish products due to the economic challenges currently facing Turkey, contributing to the recovery of some markets and the opening of new ones for Egyptian furniture products.

In a press statement today, Mendi stated that the sharp increase in interest rates and inflation in Turkey has led to higher production costs, which have been reflected in the prices of Turkish furniture. He pointed out that this situation grants Egyptian products a considerable competitive advantage in markets that have traditionally relied on Turkish furniture.

He added, “We have a great opportunity to regain our strength and activity in some traditional Arab and African markets such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Libya, Morocco, and Palestine, among others, in addition to expanding into new markets. Our products have become more competitive against Turkish products, which were previously among our strongest competitors in the furniture industry.”

Mendi highlighted the resilience of the Egyptian economy in facing crises and the government’s ability to implement sound economic policies compared to Turkey. He noted that the Central Bank of Egypt recently announced a drop in Egypt’s core inflation rate to 10% in February, down from 22.6% in January 2025.

He also pointed to the development of the Egyptian furniture sector, increased quality, and enhanced competitiveness, which have contributed to meeting the tastes of both local and international consumers. He stressed the importance of commercial representation offices in providing export opportunities and understanding market demands.

In a related context, Mendi praised the Deputy Minister of Finance’s recent announcement regarding plans to introduce a package of customs and tax relief measures. He confirmed that this decision would positively impact the import of production inputs, reducing their costs and consequently lowering the final prices of Egyptian products.

He added, “These facilitations will enhance our global competitiveness and help increase exports.”

In conclusion, Mendi commended the efforts of the Chamber of Wood and Furniture Industry at the Federation of Egyptian Industries in supporting manufacturers, facilitating production, and providing necessary training. These efforts contribute to a significant reduction in final costs and enhance the sector’s ability to compete in both local and international markets.
